Emotional Freedom Techniques™ - EFT

EFT is sometimes called “acupuncture without needles”. This unique form of energy therapy generates its results by balancing the body’s energy system. This is done by using gentle tapping movements to stimulate designated energy pathways while employing guided mental and emotional focusing.

Einstein discovered decades ago that physical matter (including the human body) is made of energy. Though the body may appear to be solid, its foundation is energetic at its core. EFT is based on the theory that the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system. The theory states that once there is a build up of emotional or physical distress, our body’s energy pathways become blocked and must be cleared in order for healing to occur. EFT restores balance to the energy system and frees the physical and emotional bodies to resume their own healing functions.

EFT employs one basic tapping routine that is effective for both physical and emotional issues. Healthy belief changes often occur as the energy pathways come into balance. A more peaceful attitude evolves and physical symptoms often subside. Results are generally long term.

Practitioners worldwide have marveled at EFT’s simplicity, elegance and rapid means of healing. It has been clinically effective in thousands of cases for physical symptoms, trauma, stress, anxiety, fears, depression, addictive cravings, children’s issues and more. It can also be used to enhance sports or general skills performance.

Visit the EFT website www.emofree.com for more details. There you will find hundreds of case histories where many physical and emotional issues have gained complete or partial relief through EFT.

THOUGH A "BASIC RECIPE" FOR EFT CAN BE EASILY LEARNED AND SELF-ADMINISTERED, IT IS ADVISABLE TO SEEK A SKILLED EFT PRACTITIONER TO FACILITATE YOU THROUGH THE PROFOUND LEVELS OF CLEARING THIS METHOD OF THERAPY CAN PROVIDE.

Should you choose to try EFT on your own, here is a basic recipe you can follow:

EFT Tapping Points For Basic Recipe

The Set-Up (Karate Chop Point):

The Sequence:

EFT BASIC “RECIPE”

PREPARATION: Identify the specific problem you want to work on and determine it's intensity level. Rate it on the intensity scale of 1-10. (10=highest intensity)

THE SET-UP: While continuously tapping the Karate Chop point say the Set-Up Phrase three times: “Even though I have this (state the problem, ie: fear, anger, etc.), I deeply and completely accept myself”.

THE SEQUENCE: Tap, with your index & middle fingers, about 7-10 times on the tapping points as listed above. Tap the points in the order that they are numbered. As you tap each point, say, "this problem" (but not the "even though" part). For example: "this fear", "this anger", "this sadness". You are focusing on the problem by stating it over and over as you tap. This is called the Reminder Phrase.

BREATHE AND REASSESS: Close your eyes. Tap your wrist points gently. Breathe in deeply and release. Notice your feelings and thoughts. Observe your physical and emotional body. You may gain further insights to your problem. Now reassess the intensity of the problem. If there is still some intensity left, do another round of tapping.

SUBSEQUENT ROUNDS: Do another round of tapping, changing the Set-Up Phrase (for the Karate Chop point) and Reminder Phrase (for the Sequence points) as follows:

Set-Up Phrase: "Even though I still have some of this (problem), I deeply and completely accept myself."

Reminder Phrase: "This remaining (problem)..." or similar words: "Still feeling some anger..."

Continue doing subsequent rounds until this problem has little or no intensity left.

ASPECTS: There may be several "aspects" as different parts of your problem. For example, you've tapped for "this anger" and the anger is gone - but you now feel sadness. You can say, "Even though I feel this sadness now."

Continue the tapping process, Set-Up & Sequence, until all aspects of the problem feel cleared.

EFT - Some Finer Points

When you work with a professional who is skilled at facilitating EFT, there are several things your practitioner may look for and weave into the EFT session. You may read about a few of those here:

Psychological/Polarity Reversal: This refers to an energetic state that is similar to a circuit breaker being blown in a kitchen, shutting off the electricity to all the appliances. In the body we have a similar need for our "circuit breaker" to be fully on and functioning. Psychological Reversal is caused by self defeating, negative thinking which often occurs subconsciously and thus outside of our awareness. When psychological reversal is present, our circuit breaker is overloaded and non-functioning. It must be corrected for EFT, or any other energy therapy to work. If psychological reversal is left uncorrected it can sabotage any self-help we are trying to attempt (ie: dieting, healing from emotional or physical trauma, etc.). To read an in-depth piece on this problem, click on Psychological Reversal.

Aspects: When addressing an issue with EFT your practitioner may find that there are several "aspects" related to one issue. The notion of aspects is an important one in EFT. Some problems have many pieces, or aspects, to them and the problem will not be completely relieved until all of the aspects are addressed. To read more about treating aspects, click on Aspects.

The Importance Of Being Specific: Sometimes we tend to lump together a number of specific problems under a larger heading. This can handicap our progress with EFT. For example, most people would like to have a better "self image" but don't realize that the term is a general label which serves as a catchall phrase for numerous specific problems (ie: memories of abuse, rejection, failure, fears of all kinds). Gary Craig, the founder of EFT, uses a metaphor that likens the general problem to a diseased forest in which each of the underlying specific issues is a negative tree. The forest may be so densely populated with trees that it may seem impossible to find our way out. As we neutralize each specific negative event with EFT we are, effectively, cutting down a negative tree. Continue cutting down these trees and, after awhile, the forest will have thinned out so we can walk out of it rather easily. It is very important to be specific when working with EFT. To read more about this, click on Be Specific.

The Generalization Effect: EFT is a fascinating therapy in that it is so multifaceted. After pointing out the importance of being specific, I want to acquaint you now with another feature of EFT. Gary Craig calls it "The Generalization Effect" because, after you address a few related problems with EFT, the process starts to generalize over all those problems. For example, someone who has 100 traumatic memories of being abused usually finds that after using EFT . . . they all vanish after neutralizing only 5 or 10 of them.

When Physical Issues Resist Healing: EFT works well on both physical and emotional issues. There are times, however, when physical issues seem to resist healing. We have learned that there is often an emotional aspect at the root of most physical issues. It is, therefore, important to search for, and treat, the emotional root of the problem in order to gain physical relief. Learn more, click on When Physical Issues Resist Healing.

Finding Core Issues: Sometimes a client's "presenting problem" is nothing more than a symptom of a Core Issue - a much deeper, much more important underlying problem. Once the Core Issue is discovered, it can usually be broken down into specific events and handled routinely. To read more about this, click on Finding Core Issues.
